Choosing the Right Transformer.
There are a variety of transformers with a wide array of sizes. The right transformer will depend on its application. Here are the steps to choose the right transformer:
1. Determine a Single or Three Phase
Choosing a single or three phase transformer depends on the application. For industrial usage, choose three phase. For relatively low power appliances, a single phase is adequate.
2. Determine the size of the transformer
A transformer’s capacity is determined by the KVA. It is the product of the higher voltage (V) of the primary and secondary times the current (A).
REMINDER: Always choose a transformer with a KVA larger than the load.This is crucial for safety purposes and it allows for expansion when a larger load is connected in the future.
Undersizing a transformer will cause unnecessary heating and can result in the failure of the unit and damage to the loads connected to it.
